Question:

33 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to alter the proposed halting site at Killinarden Road in the Dublin South West constituency in view of local opposition to the plan. [5917/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 15 and 33 together.

My function in relation to travellers is to ensure that there is an adequate legislative and financial framework within which local authorities can provide accommodation to meet the needs of travellers. Applications for capital funding are considered by reference to the guidelines issued by my Department to local authorities and having regard to the details of individual proposals, the overall costs of the scheme, etc. The selection of the location for such proposals, their size and design are matters for the local authority concerned.

Revised proposals have been received in my Department from South Dublin County Council for a combined halting site and group housing scheme at Killinarden Road. Representations in relation to the site have been received in my Department. These proposals are being examined by the technical staff of my Department and a decision on the application for funding will be notified to the council as soon as possible.
