Vol. 488 No. 3

Written Answers - Animal Waste Disposal.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

68 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the requirements of regulations, if any, in force, governing the treatment, storage and disposal of slurry generated in cattle marts and animal sales yards. [6097/98]

The Livestock Marts Regulations, 1968 (S. I. No. 251 of 1968) require marts to provide such drainage facilities so as to remove hygienically from the mart all waste matter and effluent. There are also regulations dealing with waste which are under the aegis of the Minister for the Environment and Local Government.

Question:

69 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the requirements of regulations, if any, in force, governing the treatment, storage and disposal of slurry accumulated in the plant, animal cubicles or holding yards of meat plants and abattoirs. [6099/98]

In so far as my Department is concerned the legal obligations in EU and national legislation regarding the approval of slaughtering plants are provided for in the European Communities (Fresh Meat) Regulations, 1997 and in the Abattoirs Act, 1988 (Abattoirs) Regulations, 1989. The general and specific conditions for approval are set out in that legislation and do not contain requirements in relation to disposal and storage of slurry outside of the plant.
