Vol. 488 No. 3

Written Answers - Water Pollution.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

95 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has for the alleviation of ground water pollution in rural areas; if his attention has been drawn to the high cost of tertiary treatment plants for septic tank units; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6080/98]

My Department, together with the EPA and the GSI are at present, finalising a groundwater protection scheme for Ireland. This will be published as soon as possible. It is also intended to issue a code of practice in relation to the use of single house wastewater systems with the objective of protecting groundwater resources.

The EPA recently published a report on small scale wastewater systems which includes an assessment of small scale systems and draft guidelines for the selection, design, operation and maintenance of these systems.
