Vol. 488 No. 4

Written Answers - An Bord Altranais.

Billy Timmins

Question:

202 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has for An Bord Altranais; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6400/98]

The terms of reference of the Commission on Nursing have, at the request of the commission, been extended to enable it to examine the role and function of An Bord Altranais generally, including education and professional development, regulation and protection of the citizen. The commission's final report, which is expected later this year, is likely to contain recommendations for reforming the present structures and operations of the board. It would be my firm intention to give serious consideration to such recommendations in the context of developing legislative proposals for amending the Nurses Act, 1985, under which the board was established.
