Vol. 488 No. 4

Written Answers - Vehicle Tyres.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

218 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the legal requirements and the proposed EU amendments, if any, in relation to new, remoulded and retreaded tyres for all vehicles. [6123/98]

Current legal requirements in relation to tread depth of tyres are set out in the Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment, and Use of Vehicles) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations, 1991 (S. I. No. 358 of 1991) which updated general type safety requirements and implemented Directive 89/459/EEC on the minimum tread depth of tyres. There is no proposal at present at EU level to amend this Directive.
