Vol. 488 No. 4

Written Answers - Recycled Products.

David Stanton

Question:

257 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the arrangements, if any, in place in her Department and in any State agency or body under her control to encourage or enforce the reuse or recycling of paper and, in particular, of envelopes; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6174/98]

My Department has an arrangement until 1996 with a private firm which collated the waste paper from the Department's headquarters on a weekly basis for recycling. This arrangement was discontinued by the firm because of the collapse in the price of waste paper. To date my Department has been unsuccessful despite numerous efforts in identifying another firm who would provide this service. The staff in my Department are continually encouraged to reuse envelopes for internal circulation. Arrangements for the recycling of paper in State bodies under the aegis of my Department are a matter for the individual bodies concerned.
