Vol. 488 No. 6

Written Answers. - Vehicle Weight Limits.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

158 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the weight limits for lorries on Irish roads; if his attention has been drawn to a proposal made by the European Commission to increase these limits; and, if so, when the increased limits will be introduced. [6833/98]

The current weight limits for goods vehicles are set out in the Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) (Amendment) (No. 4) Regulations, 1996 (S. I. No. 139 of 1996). Increased limits will be introduced by regulations before the end of this year in accordance with Council Directive 96/53/EC. There are no proposals at present before the Council of the EU for further increases.
