Vol. 488 No. 7

Written Answers. - Legal Aid Centres.

Pat Carey

Question:

370 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the locations of the centres funded by the Legal Aid Board on a long-term basis; the locations where centres are grant-aided to operate on a part-time basis; the budget of the Legal Aid Board for each of the years from 1996 to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7281/98]

The Legal Aid Board provides services for applicants for legal aid and legal advice from 30 full-time and 14 part-time law centres throughout the State. Details of the location of each law centre, and times of opening are contained in the tabular statement which I propose to have circulated in the Official Report.

Income to the Legal Aid Board is comprised of a grant-in-aid, which is paid by my Department, and other funds which are derived in the main from client contributions and costs recovered by the board, whether as a result of court proceedings or a settlement reached out of court. The grant-in-aid to the Legal Aid Board was £6.5 million, £8.319 million and £9.615 million in each of the years 1996 to 1998, respectively. Other income in those years amounted to £395,000, £495,000 and £341,000, respectively. The latter figure is an estimate.
