Vol. 488 No. 7

Written Answers. - Third Level Fees.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

419 Mr. M. Moynihan asked the Minister for Education and Science if fees will be waived in the case of a person (details supplied) in County Cork. [7253/98]

Under the terms of the free fees initiative, tuition fees are payable in respect of an eligible student's attendance on an approved undergraduate course. Repeat students and students who are pursuing a second period of undergraduate study at the same level do not, in general, come within the definition of an eligible student. This conditon may be waived in exceptional circumstances, such as cases of certified serious illness.

The student to whom the Deputy refers has previously pursued the first year of an undergraduate course and is now attending first year of a second undergraduate course and, therefore, is not eligible for free fees in respect of this academic year. However, the student concerned will be eligible for free fees in respect of the second and subsequent years of the second undergraduate course.
