Vol. 488 No. 7

Written Answers. - Women in Sport.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

56 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the measures, if any, in place to promote recreation and sport for women. [7230/98]

The Irish Sports Council has established a women in sport task force to develop initiatives and recommendations to strengthen the role of women in Irish sport. The task force is expected to complete its work later this year.

Meanwhile, last year, in the provision of assistance to national governing bodies of sport, special additional funding was provided to a number of sports, including camogie, ladies' hockey and ladies' gaelic football to assist in their promotion and development. Furthermore in 1998, I introduced a new application format for annual funding for governing bodies, which includes a specific request to organisations to include in their funding applications proposals for increasing and enhancing women's role in sport.
