Vol. 489 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Education Needs.

Question:

35 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals, if any, he has to provide comprehensive educational services for those with autism; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7518/98]

A special pilot programme to address the educational needs of children with autism was introduced by my Department in the 1995-96 school year.

Under this programme, a number of special classes dedicated specifically to the needs of children with autism have been established. The pilot programme involves the allocation of extra teachers to specifically address the educational needs of children with autism. It also involves the delivery of specially tailored education programmes to meet the needs of those children and the delivery of special in-service support to the teachers concerned.

My Department's inspectorate has now commenced a review of the operation of the pilot programme. This review, which is expected to be completed by the end of the current school year, will provide a basis for the development of future responses to the educational needs of children with autism.

I assure the Deputy that it is my intention to ensure that a comprehensive educational service is available to all children with autism.
