Vol. 489 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Education Needs.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

155 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals, if any, he has to discharge in full the State's obligations arising from a High Court judgment (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7798/98]

I am satisfied the State has discharged its obligations on foot of the judgment in question. Apart from obligations relating to costs, which have already been discharged, the obligations arising for the State related to the provision of an adequate education service for the child in question. In this connection, the court envisaged the provision of an education service by a fully qualified primary teacher and at a maximum pupil teacher ratio of 6:1. I am pleased to inform the Deputy that the necessary educational provision is being made available to the child in question and is available to other children with similar disabilities.
