Vol. 489 No. 2

Written Answers. - Chemists' Supplies.

Bernard Allen

Question:

44 Mr. Allen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 110 of 18 February 1998 in which she states that the Boots Chemist Group informed her that it envisages no job losses in HCR, she will make a statement on recent reports that Boots are no longer acquiring stock from former suppliers of HCR; and if she will review this serious situation which will bring about job losses in those supply companies. [7560/98]

I am informed that Boots are currently conducting an exercise to identify an appropriate range of merchandise for their stores. In this context they are in the process of writing to all of their existing Irish suppliers and I understand that Boots expect to retain the majority of them.

In the event of any suppliers not being retained, I understand that they will be given an opportunity to discuss the position with Boots. I further understand that in response to general concerns in this area, Forbairt is in the process of establishing a supplier development programme, which it is intended to pilot in the near future.

This programme, will determine at an individual company level, the appropriate changes required to assist the Irish sub-supply base to respond to the challenges arising from the structural change under way in the market and to take advantage of new opportunities which are arising in the market.

I understand that Boots Chemist Group have reaffirmed to Forbairt their commitment that there will be no job losses for employees of HCR arising from the take-over.
