Vol. 489 No. 2

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Bernard Allen

Question:

124 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has refused to sanction a £2.9 million grant to Cork Corporation to enable them to replace defective windows in 1,000 houses in Cork city which had already been refurbished but did not receive replacement windows. [7734/98]

The management, maintenance and improvement of their rented dwellings, including the replacement of windows and doors, are the responsibility of local authorities to be met from their resources and the corporation has been so advised.

Funding under the remedial works scheme is provided to assist local authorities to carry out major essential works of a structural nature to houses in designated housing estates. Some £20 million has been paid to Cork Corporation in respect of remedial works undertaken to the dwellings in question. It is now a matter for Cork Corporation to carry out any additional work, such as the replacement of windows, from their resources for the upkeep of their housing stock.
