Vol. 489 No. 5

Written Answers. - Light Rail Project.

Ivor Callely

Question:

27 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the likely investment required for the Dublin light rail system; the target dates, if any, set for the project; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8308/98]

The Government is committed to the construction of the core light railway network as recommended by the Dublin Transportation Initiative.

To date a budget of £229 million, 1997 prices, has been allocated for the construction of an on-street Tallaght-CityCentre-Dundrum light rail line. A further £10 million has been allocated for the planning and design of the Ballymun line and £14.75 million for the construction of the extension of the Dundrum line to Sandyford. A final figure for the investment costs of the system can only be determined when more detailed planning and design work has been completed.

The timetable for development of the system is dependent on construction of the first line. The position in relation to the likely commencement and completion of the Tallaght-City Centre-Dundrum lines remains as set out in my reply to Question No. 17 on 12 November 1997.
