Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

119 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will provide financial assistance to local authority tenants who wish to install central heating in their houses; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8475/98]

The management, maintenance and improvement of their existing dwellings, including the installation of central heating, is the responsibility of local authorities to be defrayed from their own resources. However, where capital funding is made available under the remedial works scheme to assist authorities in carrying out major structural works to designated housing estates, the installation of central heating in houses may form part of the works undertaken. Local authorities may also, subject to the terms of the house improvement loans scheme, issue loans to tenants for the installation of central heating.
