Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Government Supplies.

Michael Noonan

Question:

357 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Finance if he has received correspondence from the Irish Purchasing and Materials Management; if his Department has made an assessment on whether professional purchasing of public sector supplies by a private agency would lead to savings; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8741/98]

I receive correspondence and material from the Irish Institute of Purchasing and Materials Management (IIPMM) from time to time. I recognise the value of and the need for professional training in purchasing and support the IIPMM in the training and qualifications it provides in this area. I particularly welcome the recent introduction of a certification programmed for public sector buyers.

The Government Supplies Agency acts centrally on behalf of Government Departments purchasing various supplies, e.g., printing supplies, stationery, clothing, vehicles, etc. It is always policy to ensure efficiency and best practice in public sector purchasing. There are no plans to have such purchasing carried out by a private agency.
