Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - HIV Infection.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

444 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Health and Children his Department's policy in relation to health care workers who are HIV positive; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8996/98]

My Department's policy, in line with the ethical guidelines issued by the Medical Council and An Bord Altranais, is that health care workers who are HIV positive should not perform exposure prone procedures which might put patients at risk of infection. Health care workers who suspect that they may have been exposed to HIV infection should seek appropriate professional advice concerning diagnosis and treatment and adhere to any advice given by their doctor as to the nature and extent of any clinical work they may undertake.
