Vol. 490 No. 2

Written Answers - Ministerial Travel.

Enda Kenny

Question:

242 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will give details of her recent visit to Los Angeles, USA and schedule therein; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9997/98]

During the course of my recent visit to the United States, I had the opportunity to meet with senior film industry personnel in Los Angeles.

I met with a wide circle of key players at a reception arranged for me by the Irish Film Board on Wednesday 15 April and explained to them the range of measures and policies to support film production in Ireland, and Ireland's outstanding attractions as a European location and centre for film production. I had separate meetings with senior executives of Fox Filmed Entertainment, Paramount Pictures and Disney Studios on Thursday, 16 April.

I consider that these meetings were vitally important in ensuring that Ireland remains on the mental map of decision makers in Hollywood when considering making a film in Europe. I emphasised that Ireland is a rich source of talent and creativity and that opportunities exist for US producers to work with Irish producers in developing stories for the international market. I would hope to further develop and strengthen the links between the US film industry and the Irish film industry.

Finally, I take the opportunity to place on the record of the House my appreciation of the assistance provided to me by members of the Irish Film Board, in making the arrangements to ensure that my visit was a success.
