Vol. 490 No. 2

Written Answers - Mountjoy Prison Inmates.

Question:

247 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will give details of the number of prisoners currently in Mountjoy Prison that were once in Saint Patrick's Institution; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9819/98]

Statistics are not maintained in a fashion which would allow the precise information requested by the Deputy to be made available. The extraction of the information from manual records would require the use of an inor-dinate amount of staff resources which could not be justified at this time.

The Deputy may, however, be interested to know that a study on the Mountjoy Prison population "A Sociological and Criminological Profile" which was published by my Department in June, 1997 found that about 77 per cent of the prisoner sample profiled had previously spent time in St. Patrick's Institution.
