Vol. 490 No. 2

Written Answers - Garda Escorts.

Ulick Burke

Question:

262 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will continue to provide escort for security vans transporting money between banks despite bank profits of over £1 billion during the period when escort costs have doubled; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10087/98]

The Garda provides escorts for movements of large sums of cash throughout the State as a crime prevention measure, to prevent such cash falling into the hands of subversive or criminal organisations.

The costs involved in providing Garda cash escorts are monitored on a continuing basis and the amount of the financial contribution sought from the associated banks is the subject of ongoing review.
