Burke asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will continue to provide escort for security vans transporting money between banks despite bank profits of over £1 billion during the period when escort costs have doubled; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Garda provides escorts for movements of large sums of cash throughout the State as a crime prevention measure, to prevent such cash falling into the hands of subversive or criminal organisations.
The costs involved in providing Garda cash escorts are monitored on a continuing basis and the amount of the financial contribution sought from the associated banks is the subject of ongoing review.
