Vol. 490 No. 2

Written Answers - School Funding.

Nora Owen

Question:

279 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science the actions, if any, his Department has taken to solve the problems of the national school in Rivermeade, St. Margaret's, County Dublin; and if he will ensure that adequate arrangements are in place to prevent the school having to be closed again. [9767/98]

Officials of my Department met a delegation from the school referred to by the Deputy on 24 February 1998 to discuss the school's financial situation. Arising from this meeting, a grant of £13,414 was issued to the school on 6 March 1998.

The school was informed that £10,414 of the sum allocated was to be used for the alleviation of the school's debt position at the time. The additional £3,000 was intended to cover the school's contribution towards the cost of erecting a new fence which has been requested by the school.

These measures will make a significant contribution to helping the school, particularly in the context of the vandalism of school property which has impacted so significantly on the school up to now.
