Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Pat Carey

Question:

294 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the impending loss of a teacher at Sacred Heart primary school, Dublin 11, in view of the advantages accruing from the demographic dividend; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10417/98]

The authorised staffing complement at the Sacred Heart primary school in the current school year consists of a principal, 16 class teachers and two remedial teachers. This staffing level was determined by reference to the school's enrolment of 478 pupils in September 1996. While final decisions have not yet been made regarding the 1998-9 staffing allocations, the school's enrolment of 471 in September 1997 is unlikely to be sufficient to ensure the retention of its existing staffing complement.

I have asked officials of my Department to review the position at this school as soon as the staffing arrangements for the 1998-9 school year have been finalised, and to contact the board of management directly in the matter.
