44 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of cars and other motor vehicles on our roads in 1988; and the estimated number in 1998. [6248/98]

There were 749,459 private cars and 231,837 other vehicles currently taxed on the roads in 1988. It is estimated on the basis of the sustained increases experienced in recent years that by year end in 1998 there will be 1.21 million private cars and 315,000 other vehicles on our roads.
