Vol. 490 No. 6

Written Answers. - Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

62 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will give an account of the recent meeting on sustainable development held in New York; and the Government policy regarding the stabilisation and reduction of use of greenhouse gases in this country. [10935/98]

The 6th Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development, CSD, met in New York from 20 April-1 May 1998. In accordance with the work programme agreed at the 19th Special Session of the UN General Assembly, UNGASS, in June 1997, CSD V1 considered: strategic approaches to freshwater management; industry and sustainable development; transfer of technology; capacity building; education; science; and awareness raising.

CSD V1 considered these issues with particular reference to the overriding issues of poverty eradication and production and consumption patterns. A copy of the full report of the session will be forwarded to the Deputy.

With regard to Government policy in relation to greenhouse gases, I refer to the reply to Question No. 45 of 6 May 1998.
