Vol. 490 No. 6

Written Answers. - Offshore Islands.

Enda Kenny

Question:

65 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if her Department will fund the provision of a cable car to Innisbiggle Island, Achill, County Mayo, in view of the fact that planning permission with appropriate conditions has issued by Mayo County Council; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10831/98]

Since this question, which specifically relates to matters regarding a Gaeltacht island, is being put to me in English, I am answering it in English even though I have stated that it is my policy to answer all such representations and parliamentary questions in the Irish language.

I am aware of Mayo County Council's decision to grant planning permission for the erection of a cable car between Inishbiggle and Achill Island. As I have stated previously in the House, I visited Inishbiggle on 29 October 1997 at which time I had discussions with the islanders and the co-op regarding the needs of the island. The need for safe access to and from the island was among the issues discussed and I understand that the islanders are in favour of the cable car proposal as a solution to their problem.

A revised application for funding in respect of this proposal, based on the county council's decision and the conditions therein, is expected by my Department. When it is received it will be considered and a decision will be made at the earliest possible date.
