Written Answers. - Asylum Applications.

Liz McManus

Question:

96 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of Angolan nationals seeking asylum; the number deported since 1992; the number granted refugee status since 1992; and the number granted humanitarian leave to remain since 1992. [10902/98]

Some 245 applications were received from Angolan nationals during the period referred to by the Deputy. Of this number 22 were granted refugee status, 24 were granted temporary leave to remain, two were refused refugee status, 50 applications were withdrawn and the remaining 147 cases are awaiting decision. Deportation orders were not made in relation to any Angolan national in this period.

Question:

97 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the steps, if any, he has taken to improve the procedures for the 1998 renewal of asylum seekers' identity cards. [10903/98]

I am in the process of setting up procedures for the renewal of identity cards for asylum seekers. These procedures will ensure that asylum seekers will not have to undergo avoidable inconvenience when identity cards are next being issued.
