Vol. 490 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Liam Aylward

Question:

240 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education and Science if a free school bus pass will issue to a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny in view of her medical history and the medical evidence submitted on her behalf by her GP to Bus Éireann in Waterford in March 1998. [11163/98]

Special transport arrangements on medical grounds may only be considered by my Department where pupils are medically handicapped to the extent that they cannot make their own way to school or to the pick-up point. Applicants for such transport are required to submit a medical form completed by their family doctor. My Department then submits the application to the medical adviser for a decision.

I understand that the school principal in this case made representations to Bus Éireann's local office. Although Bus Éireann advised that the matter should be taken up directly with my Department, no correspondence has been received on the matter to date.

An official form for this purpose has been forwarded to the family in question. Once the relevant information has been received, the application will be examined and the Deputy will be advised of the outcome.
