Vol. 490 No. 7

Written Answers. - Motor Fuels.

Dan Neville

Question:

85 Mr. Neville asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the reason for the widespread variation in petrol and diesel prices throughout the country where there is a variation of more than ten pence per litre in view of the confusion which these prices create for tourists visiting the country. [11135/98]

Official price control of petrol and auto diesel prices was discontinued in 1991. In the meantime, the policy of successive Governments has been to promote free and fair competition with the aim of creating greater price competition and wider consumer choice. Consumers are encouraged to shop around before making purchase decisions. Competition between petrol and auto diesel outlets is to the benefit of national consumers and tourists visiting the country.
