Vol. 491 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sports Capital Programme.

Ivor Callely

Question:

30 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the funds available to him to promote sport and recreation in the community by way of grants to community organisations in 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11236/98]

Some £9 million is provided in the Estimates of my Department for 1998 in respect of the sports capital programme. This important programme provides national lottery funding towards the provision of sports facilities at national, regional and local level. It is the primary vehicle for promoting the development of sport and recreational facilities in Ireland and currently comprises the major facilities and recreational facilities schemes. The major facilities scheme is a capital programme for major facilities at national, regional and local level. The recreational facilities scheme assists voluntary and community organisations in providing, improving and equipping recreational, leisure and community facilities. Under the programme for 1998 £3 million is provided for the recreational facilities scheme and £6 million for the major facilities scheme.

The sports capital programme is multi-annual in that funds available in 1998 will go towards meeting outstanding commitments under the programme. A total of £19.8 million is currently committed under the programme. This includes about £5 million which I allocated recently to a range of projects throughout the country.
