Vol. 491 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Olympics Selection Team.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

48 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if the Special Olympics site selection team visited Ireland in April 1998; if so, if he will provide details of that visit; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11293/98]

The Special Olympics Bid Site Selection Team visited Ireland from 2-5 April, 1998, as guests of Special Olympics Ireland. The purpose of the visit was to assess the capability of Ireland to host the games in 2003.

As the Deputy will see from their itinerary for the selection team, which I propose to forward to him, I hosted a reception in Dublinia and a breakfast in Government Buildings during the visit which gave the team an opportunity to assess the enthusiasm already generated among the business community for the games and to be assured of the Government's support for the bid.

A final decision on the successful host country is expected later this month.
