Vol. 491 No. 1

Written Answers. - PLC Courses.

Paul McGrath

Question:

123 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in the context of his proposals to provide funding for post leaving certificate courses from September 1998, he will confirm if this funding will facilitate Irish students who register for PLC courses in the United Kingdom or Northern Ireland from this date. [11493/98]

The Programme for Government, An Action Programme for the Millennium, provides a commitment to the introduction of equitable support of students attending PLC courses. Furthermore, I have already advised the House of my intention to introduce grants, which will be at the same level as the third level maintenance grants, as soon as possible, for students who are registered on PLC courses as of September 1998.

Due to resource constraints, it is not my intention to extend these grants to Irish students attending similar courses in Northern Ireland or the United Kingdom at this time.
