Question:

9 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of asylum seekers waiting to have their applications processed; and the number deported to date since the enactment of the Refugee Act, 1996. [11528/98]

The number of asylum seekers who are waiting to have their applications processed to date is 5,626. The yearly breakdown is as follows: 1992, 2; 1993, 1; 1994, 3; 1995, 29; 1996, 587; 1997, 3,120 and 1998, 1,884.

To date since the enactment of the Refugee Act, two persons who had full recourse to the asylum procedure have been deported while a further 11 persons have been deported pursuant to the Dublin Convention.
