Vol. 491 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

57 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total population in each of the Garda divisions; the number of gardaí in each division; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11479/98]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. I understand that in determining the level of resources required by each Garda division and district they take into consideration a number of factors which would affect the level of personnel required in each area. These include crime trends, population trends and demographic change, etc.

It should be noted that the following table shows the number of Garda personnel by division as at 30 April, 1998, while the population figures are based on the 1996 Census of Population.
