Vol. 491 No. 2

Written Answers. - Citizenship Law.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

132 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform whether his Department intends to change the ground rules for Irish citizenship as reported in a newspaper (details supplied) on 15 April 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9870/98]

The interdepartmental committee on immigration, asylum and related issues brought forward a report last February. The committee made a number of recommendations, including a recommendation that legislation should be examined to see what changes might be possible to eliminate abuses of Irish citizenship law in regard to post nuptial citizenship and the deliberate arrangement of births to non-national parents here. This recommendation will fall to be considered in the light of the Agreement reached in the multi-party negotiations on 10 April and its implementation.
