Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Computer Programmes.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

238 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Finance the progress to date in ensuring that each agency within his remit is year 2000 compliant; the cost of work done so far; the estimated cost of full compliance; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11786/98]

The question of ensuring year 2000 compliance is being actively pursued by my Department and those offices and agencies under its remit, in line with formal year 2000 plans which have all been put in place last year. These plans quantified the effort involved in making computer hardware and software and office equipment fully compliant. The work identified is currently under way and measures have been put in place to monitor progress, both within my own Department and those Government offices and agencies under its aegis.

Along with all Government Departments and offices, my Department now provides quarterly reports on such progress to the interdepartmental year 2000 monitoring committee which I established last year to oversee the achievement of the year 2000 compliance for IT systems and other office equipment in the Civil Service. The committee, which is chaired by my Department, has already reported to Government and will be continuing to report on a two monthly basis from now on.

With regard to costs, the plans drawn up last year by Government Departments and offices identified the extra costs which they expected to incur in achieving full compliance and these follow for those offices under my remit. Specific costs are not available for the agencies, nor is it possible at this stage to identify accurate costs on the work carried out to date.
