Written Answers. - Assisted Human Reproduction.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

281 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the practice of freezing and implanting of embryos in a Dublin hospital; the guidelines, if any, his Department has laid down in relation to this practice; if he will consult the Legislature on these issues; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11822/98]

I am aware that a Dublin hospital has recently decided to commence the practice referred to by the Deputy, as part of the in-vitro fertilisation service offered by a private clinic at the hospital. My Department is in contact with the hospital to seek clarification about all aspects of the matter, which involves significant medical, legal and ethical issues.
