Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Folklore Council of Ireland.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

458 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of times the Folklore Council of Ireland has met in the past four years; the names of the members of the council; the names of those appointed by him; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11734/98]

There have been no meetings of the Folklore Council in the past four years. The last meeting of the council was held on 11 May 1994.

The term of office of the council expired on 31 March 1996 and on 31 October 1996 my predecessor nominated the following four persons for appointment by the President of NUI, Dublin to the new council for a three year term expiring on 31 March 1999: Mr. Michael Ross, Máirin Bean Mhic Goráin, Mr. Dennis Kenny, Mr. Peter Rigney.

However, the council has not yet been reconstituted by NUI, Dublin pending finalisation of its review of the Department of Irish folklore.
