Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Habours and Piers.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

162 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will respond to the case made for the development of Cleggan pier, in particular Cleggan Harbour, as requested by the Cleggan Claddaghduff Community Council. [11762/98]

My Department, in co-operation with Galway County Council, is undertaking a substantial programme of works for the repair and upgrading of Cleggan pier which involves expenditure in the region of £250,000. I anticipate that these works will be completed later this year.

Any proposals for further development works will require to be assessed in the first instance by Galway County Council. In the event of such proposals being put to my Department they will be considered in the context of the limited funding available for fishery harbours development and the need for that funding to be focused in the first instance on the key strategic fishing ports.
