Question:

107 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, there are to police an area (details supplied) in County Mayo over the June bank holiday weekend in view of the fact that the new local Garda station has been closed. [12462/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 102 and 107 together.

I have been advised by the Garda Commissioner that the Station in question is temporarily closed to facilitate the installation of new Garda radio communications equipment.

The Commissioner intends to open the station in question at the earliest opportunity.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that while the station is temporarily closed the assigned member will be based at Achill Sound Garda Station. I have been assured by them that a normal policing service will be provided in the area in question over the June bank holiday weekend. Patrols of the area will be carried out by the assigned member in the patrol car allocated to the Achill Sound Garda Station together with a member from that Station. In addition, the Divisional Traffic Corps and Public Order Unit will do duty in the area over the bank holiday weekend. This patrolling will be augmented as necessary by other resources from within the division.

The Garda authorities have informed me that they are satisfied that the policing arrangements in place for the area referred to by the Deputy over the bank holiday are adequate to meet its policing needs.

Question:

103 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the amount spent in providing a new Garda station (details supplied) in County Mayo. [12458/98]

I have been informed by the Office of Public Works that the estimated cost of providing the new Garda station at Keel is £170,000 inclusive of VAT. In addition the cost of acquiring the site for the new station was £11,000.
