Vol. 491 No. 6

Written Answers. - Light Rail Project.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

33 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if, in relation to the Government decision of 5 May 1998 regarding a light rail network for Dublin, she will give the expected starting and completion dates for each of the proposed phases; the total expected cost of the project; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12747/98]

Ivor Callely

Question:

48 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 27 on 2 April 1998, the Government is still committed to the construction of the core light railway network as recommended by the Dublin Transportation Initiative; the time schedule for the detailed planning and design for the recent Government announcement regarding Luas; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12694/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 33 and 48 together.

The recent decision on an expanded and enhanced Dublin light rail project is consistent with the Government's repeated commitment to implement the core light rail network recommended by the Dublin Transportation Initiative. Indeed it goes beyond that commitment by providing for links to Dublin Airport and Connolly Station. For the information of the Deputies a tabular statement setting out an indicative timetable for the various elements of the project which I circulated on 12 May last in the course of the debate on the Private Members' motion on the light rail project follows. I stressed at that time that the target dates are subject to satisfactory completion of the necessary statutory procedures and to the necessary technical evaluations. The estimated cost of the project is in excess of £400 million and when further detailed technical work is carried out a firm cost estimate will be available.

A preliminary estimate of the timescales involved is shown below. The timetable is subject to the satisfactory completion of the relevant statutory processes and technical evaluations.
