Vol. 491 No. 6

Written Answers. - Aviation Safety Regulations.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

52 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her attention has been drawn to proposals from the United States Federal Aviation Authority for modifications to the wiring system of Boeing 737 aircraft following the investigation into the crash of a TWA aircraft in July 1996; the steps, if any, being taken to ensure that these modifications are carried out to 737s flown by Irish airlines; the number of these craft flown by Irish airlines; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12750/98]

The subject of the Deputy's question falls within the safety regulatory remit of the Irish Aviation Authority. The Authority is charged with responsibility to regulate the safe operation of Irish Aviation. I am aware however that the Authority has taken all necessary steps to ensure compliance by Irish operators of Boeing 737 aircraft with directives issued by the United States Federal Aviation Authority regarding the fuel tank wiring of these aircraft.
