Vol. 491 No. 7

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

David Stanton

Question:

180 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of driver testers he proposes to appoint in order to deal with the waiting lists for driving tests; the projected time scale for these appointments; the arrangements, if any, in place in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13257/98]

The increased level of applications for driving tests will be dealt with through a combination of measures including engagement of contract testers and recruitment of permanent tester. I refer the Deputy to my reply to Questions Nos. 337 and 361 of 26 May 1998 on this mater.

In so far as the permanent recruitment is concerned, I understand that an advertisement inviting applications for the post of driver tester was placed by the Civil Service Commission in theIrish Independent newspaper today. A similar advertisement will appear in The Irish Times and The Examiner newspapers tomorrow and in Foinse on Sunday next, 7 June 1998 the closing date for receipt of application forms by the commission is 25 June 1998.
