Vol. 491 No. 7

Written Answers. - Official Engagements.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

47 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Defence if he will report on his recent visit to the 28th Infantry Battalion in Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13002/98]

On 28 and 29 May 1998 I visited the Border units of the Eastern and Western Commands, including the 28th Infantry Battalion. The visit was part of an overall programme of familiarisation visits to military installations which is now complete. The programme has allowed me acquaint myself with the operations of the Army, Air Corps and Naval Service and to see at first hand the many diverse activities carried out by the Defence Forces on a day to day basis.

The visit to the 28th Infantry Battalion included visits to Finner Camp, Rockhill Military Post and Lifford Military Post. I received a comprehensive briefing on the important work being carried out by the Defence Forces at each location. I took the opportunity at each venue to have a very open, frank exchange of views with members of the Defence Forces. Many issues were raised and discussed, including the ongoing reorganisation of the Defence Forces, personnel and pay matters and Army hearing loss claims.
