Vol. 491 No. 7

Written Answers. - Departmental Property.

Jack Wall

Question:

141 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Defence the land use of land owned by his Department in the Curragh of Kildare; the future plans, if any, he has for these lands; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13307/98]

The Curragh plains are an area of immense archaeological, cultural, environmental and historical interest. The area has been classified as a national monument and is in the process of being designated a natural heritage area — NHA. The three main users of the area are the military authorities, horse trainers and sheep owners. The legislation, management structure and procedures governing the use of the Curragh are kept under review in order to ensure that they are adequate to protect the integrity of the fabric of the area.
