Vol. 492 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Lottery Funding.

John Gormley

Question:

116 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Finance the existing designated categories for lottery funding; the categories most recently been added to this list; the scope, if any, there is to add categories to the list; who is responsible for the creation of these categories; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13686/98]

Under section 5 of the National Lottery Act, 1986, the surplus from the national lottery may be used for the following purposes: sport and other recreation; national culture, including the Irish language; the arts, within the meaning of the Arts Act, 1951; the health of the community, and for such other purposes as the Government may determine from time to time. The following additional beneficiary categories were designated by the Government under this section: youth, welfare, amenities, the Dublin Millennium 1988, national heritage and Expo '92.

It is a matter for the Government to decide any additional categories which may be designated for national lottery funding.
