Vol. 492 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sports Funding.

Bernard Allen

Question:

226 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the reason the Irish Schools Swimming Association has not received funding in 1998 in view of the fact that it is an independent body from the Irish Amateur Swimming Association and, up to now, has been independently funded but, to date in 1998, has received no funding despite the fact that other water-related sports have received funding this year. [13604/98]

The issues dealt with by the independent inquiry into matters relating to child sexual abuse in swimming arose in the context of participation by, and coaching of, children in the sport of swimming specifically. The question of the funding of the Irish Schools Swimming Association, which is affiliated to the Irish Amateur Swimming Association, will be considered as soon as I have had the opportunity to discuss the contents of the report of the independent inquiry with the IASA and they have presented to me their proposals for confronting any issues arising for them. As the Deputy may be aware, Dr. Murphy, chairman of the inquiry, has completed his report and I am now considering the advice of the Attorney-General with a view to early submission to Government on appropriate next steps.
