261 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the information, if any, in relation to the estimated 1,000 pupils who fail to proceed to secondary school in relation to gender, social background, residence and so on. [13481/98]

Figures supplied to my Department indicate that 435 boys and 301 girls — 736 in total — who left primary school at the end of the 1996-7 school year did not proceed to second level in September, 1997.

My Department has no details in relation to the social background or residence of these pupils.
