Michael Ferris

Question:

25 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the plans, if any, he has for the future of the Irish food industry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13458/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 21 and 25 together.

The food industry development group, established under the aegis of my Department in April last, has been charged with the task of developing an action plan for the food industry in the context of a strategic approach to the future use of national funds and Structural Funds. As part of its remit the group will examine the current position in, and development needs of, all segments of the industry, including the pigmeat sector. As I am sure the Deputy will appreciate pending receipt of the group's report, which is expected in September, it would be inappropriate for me to comment on any particular sector or other aspects of its deliberations.
