Vol. 492 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Education Needs.

Nora Owen

Question:

159 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide the necessary resources to Kinsealy national school to enable a person (details supplied) in County Dublin to receive her education at this school in view of her physical disabilities. [13759/98]

Ivan Yates

Question:

161 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education and Science when a resource teacher will be appointed to a primary school (details supplied) in County Wexford in view of the fact that this appointment has been sought for the past two years and there are pupils with special needs; and if he will give early approval for this. [13761/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 159 and 161 together.

I am aware that applications for resource teacher posts have been made by both of the schools to which the Deputies refer. My capacity to allocate additional resource teacher posts in any given year is dependent on resource availability and the level of competing demand from other special needs areas. I have to determine priorities and allocate available resources to best effect.

I am currently reviewing provision across the special needs area, including the resource teacher area, to ensure that all available resources are deployed as effectively as possible. I can assure the Deputies that the cases to which they refer will be considered in the context of any additional resource teacher allocations which may be undertaken for the forthcoming school year.
